In response to numerous complaints about child safety, the Montclair Police Department is kicking off the Phase One of their Bike Safety Initiative. It is the hope of the department that the initiative brings awareness to the dangers of riding a bike or skateboard without a helmet and helps to spur the improvement of overall safety.
To begin the safety awareness program, officers on patrol will be handing out warning summons to any minor who rides a bike or a skateboard without a helmet. Said minors will also be stopped and issued a warning summons for engaging in other unsafe behaviors while on their bike or skateboard. Along with the summons, these children will also receive coupons which allow for 10% off a helmet.
In the months to follow, officers will begin to stop children who are wearing their helmets and engaging in safe behaviors on their bikes and skateboards. They will receive vouchers for redeemable for a special treat at local businesses in town. See below for participating businesses.
