A Statement on Marijuana Legalization

New Jersey’s current laws on marijuana do not work.

The laws do not prevent young people from accessing marijuana and many adults, disproportionately people of color, wind up with criminal records for possessing small amounts.  The laws are ineffective, ill-conceived and ultimately more harmful than the drug that they ban.

At the state level, New Jersey is on the verge of joining several other states in repealing the antiquated prohibition of marijuana and enacting legislation to tax, regulate, and legalize marijuana for adults.

I am fully in favor of such legislation.

Legalizing, taxing and regulating marijuana is a win for social justice, a win for public safety and a win for tax payers.

More importantly it’s the right thing to do.

I look forward to working with stakeholders in Montclair and throughout government to ensure a responsible path forward.
